Mickey dome cakes at Amorette's

Amorette's Patisserie Cake Decorating Experience

We kicked off the third day of our Walt Disney World trip with fan-favorite Amorette's Patisserie Cake Decorating Experience. As we made our way to Amorette's bakery from the Lime parking lot (the closest lot to the bakery), most of the stores were closed which allowed us to take some pictures without others in the background.   If you want to buy a beautiful character cake Amorette's is the place to go. In addition to the Mickey dome cake, you can find some favorite sweet treats at this bakery (not a part of the cake-decorating class, but to purchase already made.)

Arrival at Amorette's Patisserie

As you arrive you are offered specialty coffees which is a nice treat early in the morning. Each table seats 2 people, to make one classic Mickey Mouse dome cake. We had reserved 2 tables, so 4 of us took part in making a Mickey Mouse-decorated cake and we were taking home a second cake. As we sat down with our specialty coffees, our instructor a seasoned chef who had been with Disney for 15 years and was one of the founding chefs at the Be Our Guest restaurant, guided us through the cake-decorating process. First, he told us about the history of Amorette's Patisserie and introduced Amorette's pastry artists who were decorating some of Amorette's signature cakes to be sold that day. The instructor guided us each step of the way, and other cast members walked around to help as well as we made our own edible work of art.

Decorating our Cake

Learning about the intricate cake decorating process was incredibly fun and fascinating experience. The class is already given a baked cake, it is the job of the class to do the finishing touches. The class transforms a plain cake into a classic Mickey design. There are so many detailed aspects of the cake decorating like, Mickey's iconic ears are made out of white chocolate painted black with edible paint.  So we were given white chocolate in the shape of Mickey's ears and painted them black with edible paint. We were then guided on attaching the ears to the dome cake.  The instructor talked about the process of designing the character dome cake that I never would have thought about, such as finding such vivid colors of the red dome body was initially a challenge.

At the end of class, the cast members walk around to take pictures of you with your final product. Amorette’s Bakery kindly stored our cakes until the end of the day, allowing us to head straight to Epcot afterward. Not only did they store the cakes, but they put the cakes into their display case, so anyone coming into the bakery during the day would see our cakes. When we returned to pick up our cakes, we stayed at Amorette’s to enjoy some coffee and try some of their gorgeous cakes, which were also delicious. The cakes we made were delicious and we finished both of them before returning home. Having a piece of our beautiful character cake every evening was a pleasant treat every evening when we returned from the parks.

Suggestions and Takeaways

I suggest doing this activity early in your trip, so you have time to finish the cakes while still in Disney World. The Mickey dome cake was sent home in the most delightful cake box, which doubles as Mickey's ears storage box after you finish the cake—just be sure to leave room in your suitcase. I was able to pack the cake box in our checked luggage and use it to store our mini souvenirs.  Cake-decorating classes are offered on select mornings, in a small group setting. Online bookings are necessary for this class and can be reserved in the My Disney Experience App.

My daughter is always watching cooking shows and has a keen interest in baking. The class is a 90-minute hands-on experience that my daughter will cherish.  She was thrilled with this enchanting extra. The entire experience was so much fun and made us feel like pastry chefs for the morning. Not only did we have a great time making our Mickey cake, but it was also a nice change of pace.
