Discover Camping As An Alternative Budget Travel Experience

Summer is here, and that means summer trip plans. Summer is the perfect time to explore the great outdoors. Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast or someone looking to dip their toes into the world of camping, finding the right spot for your adventurous family vacation can make all the difference. When I was growing up, my parents had a trailer that stayed on a campground in upstate New York. Every weekend from Mother’s Day through to the first frost of the year, we would go to the campground. Some of my fondest memories from my childhood took place at the campground. Between the campfires, wonderful friendships, and the great outdoors… it was some of the most exceptional experiences I had as a kid. The friendships I made at that campground have stayed with me for 30 years. These friends I made camping have become family, they have been bridesmaids at my wedding, our kids are friends, and they are who we turn to when you need a friend. In our 20s we started reuniting to go tent camping every so often, but once our kids were old enough we dedicated a weekend every summer to go tent camping with our kids. We wanted them to have the same magical experiences we had as kids. They get to unwind, disconnect from devices and the internet, learn how to BBQ and learn how to make a campfire. Camping is a great means of exploration for a kid to enjoy exceptional outdoor experiences.

While camping cannot be travel hacked, once you have the correct gear it can be an inexpensive travel opportunity. Admittedly, the first time you go camping gear can add up (tent, air mattresses, coolers, sleeping bags, etc. However, after the first year, the only costs are groceries and the rental of a campsite.  The cost of campsites varies significantly.  Campgrounds vary and offer an incredible variety and range of experiences with camping. Sometimes we go camping in NYS parks and it can cost as little as $24 a night, which is a very rustic experience. We have also stayed at very family campgrounds such as Yogi Bear, where the costs can go up to $150 a night for a tent site.  There are rustic campgrounds, luxurious RV resorts, and everything in between.

There are various websites such as Campspot.com, which can help you discover campgrounds in North America that would suit your needs.  Campspot.com is an online booking platform, where you can search campgrounds and filter by the availability of park features such as desired location, dates, and amenities like pet-friendliness, Wi-Fi access,  waterfront views, and even hot tubs. There is such a wide range of RV parks and what they offer. Campspot.com also has guest experiences allowing you to sort and filter for the best campgrounds near you. Another option for first-time campers or those looking for a bit more comfort is cabins or rental cottages at campgrounds. We have stayed in cabins when we go camping with my parents, who are not interested in sleeping in a tent but still want the camping experience.

Tips for a Great Camping Experience

  • Plan Ahead: Popular campgrounds fill up quickly, especially during peak season. It is possible to have a last-minute getaway, but you may not be able to get your first-choice site or campground.

  • Check Amenities: Make sure the campsite has the facilities you need, such as bathrooms, showers, and electrical hookups.

  • Be Prepared: Pack appropriately for the weather and terrain. Bring essentials like a first aid kit, proper clothing, and enough food and water (many locations have a small store at the campground or are located a short drive from a supermarket).

  • We have used the Campros CP 8 person tent the past few years. We fit 2 queen air mattresses and 2 large dogs comfortably.

Even though you cannot use points for camping, sites such as campspot.com offer a wide range of price options for outdoor enthusiasts or your next family trip. While camping takes an initial investment for supplies, a subsequent camping trip can be a very inexpensive option for your next outdoor adventure.
