Family Travel Hacking: Group Trips with Credit Card Points
Maximize Your Family's Travel Rewards: Group Trip Hacking with Credit Card Points
Family vacations are cherished memories, but they can also come with a hefty price tag. The cost of accommodations, flights, and activities for a group can quickly add up. Fortunately, with a little strategic planning and the power of credit card points, you can significantly reduce the expense of your family getaways. In this comprehensive guide, we'll explore how families can become savvy travel hackers, maximizing credit card points to save on group trips and make the most of their travel budget. Here's how to make the most of your travel reward credit card points for unforgettable group trips.
Understanding Your Goals:
Before diving into the world of travel hacking, families must define their travel goals. Whether it's a dream Disney vacation, a beach getaway, or exploring new cultures abroad, understanding your family's priorities will help you select the right credit cards and tailor your points-earning strategy accordingly. I recently planned a Disney World Trip with my kids and my parents. For us, it was worth staying off property at Marriott Villa which allowed us to spread out among 3 bedrooms. We pooled our airline points together to cover all 6 airline tickets using points. Many hotels offer connecting rooms or suites with multiple bedrooms. It would be worthwhile figuring out which hotels would best meet your family's needs. Choosing the Right Credit Cards:
Once you find your hotel, choose a cobranded credit card for that hotel chain, for example, Marriott, Hyatt, Hilton, etc all have credit cards affiliated with those hotels. Maximizing Points Earning:
Once you've chosen your credit cards, it's time to start earning points strategically. Take advantage of bonus categories such as groceries, gas, and dining to accelerate your points accumulation. Additionally, look for opportunities to earn extra points through sign-up bonuses, referral programs, and shopping portals.
Pooling Points and Accounts:
Many credit card issuers offer family account options or allow cardholders to pool points or transfer points among members. I often transfer Hilton points between my husband and me to book our stay under one reservation. Jet Blue has a family pooling program, where I can use each of my family’s individual points to make reservations for the 4 of us. Take advantage of these features to consolidate your points and streamline your redemption process. By pooling points, families can unlock higher-tier rewards and stretch their points further, making it easier to plan group trips without worrying about insufficient points balances. I often lend my mom points when we are traveling together. She often accumulates Hilton points, but not at the same speed as I do (household of 2 versus household of 4 monthly spending).
Redeeming Points Strategically:
When it comes to redeeming your hard-earned points, strategic planning is key. Research redemption options carefully, considering factors such as point value, availability, and flexibility. Look for opportunities to stretch your points further by booking during off-peak travel periods. Additionally, prioritize family-friendly redemption options such as all-inclusive resorts or vacation rentals that offer ample space and amenities for the whole family. Look for hotel options that include a kitchen to save money on meals.
Spend Responsibly:
Be sure not to overspend your monthly household budget in the name of earning points. The largest group of points comes from sign-up bonuses, and new credit card approvals will become skim in your in debt.
