Strategic Earning:
The key to accumulating a significant amount of travel points lies in strategic earning. If you are only accumulating points for hotel stays or flights taken, it will be very difficult to earn enough points for free trips. Strategic earning involves utilizing credit cards, and bonus offers to accrue points efficiently. Look for credit cards that offer generous sign-up bonuses and bonus categories aligned with your spending habits. Additionally, take advantage of shopping portals that offer extra points for purchases made through their platforms. By being intentional with your spending, you can quickly amass a substantial number of points. Important things to remember when earning points:
Keep applying for new card offers. Sign-up bonuses and the welcome offers earned on a new rewards-earning credit card will supply the largest group of credit card points. This will be one of the main ways to earn free travel. Be sure to meet the minimum spending requirement for new cards in order to get that welcome bonus.
Keep track of free nights earned for minimum spending on a certain card ( for example Amex Surpass, spend $15,000 and earn a free night certificate). To learn more about free night certificates check out our post “Making the Most of Hilton: Strategies for Free Night Certificates”.
When you are not working towards a sign-up bonus, charge expenses to cards within the sign-up bonus. For example, if a card had bonus points for restaurants and gas, be sure to charge all dining and gas station charges to that card. If a different card has a bonus category for transit or a fitness club, be sure to use that card for those charges. Make sure all of your everyday spending is charged to travel reward credit cards.
Purchase gift cards at a store within a bonus category for your other expenses. For example, my Amex Surpass and Amex Marriott Bevy both have bonus categories for grocery stores. So, I purchase Amazon and Target gift cards when I am at the grocery store so that I earn bonus points on money I spend in non-bonus categories. Use a spouse or partner as a person 2 when signing up for new credit cards. This will allow you to get a welcome offer on a card twice. However, not all redemptions are created equal. Be flexible with your travel dates and destinations, you can often find better redemption options and stretch your points further.
Maximizing Perks: In addition to free flights and hotel stays, many travel rewards programs offer a range of perks and benefits that can enhance your travel experience. These perks might include airport lounge access, elite status, or travel insurance coverage. Take the time to familiarize yourself with the benefits offered by your loyalty programs and leverage them to make your travels more comfortable and enjoyable.
